August 2005 Tournament Results:
Gentlemen,
A long-held philosophy I live by is, “The more you bet, the less you lose if you win”.*
Another major tenet in my life is, “Time flies like the wind … fruit flies like bananas”. (?)
There’s more, but you get the point.
So, now, concentrating (finally) on the August tournament, we would like to welcome new members, Sinforiano Echeverria, Laurent Lefebvre and Carlos Wiegering to the association. Hope to see you all out on the course for the tournaments.
We would also like to extend a sincere thank you to our on-course sponsor, David Montero, manager of Heineken, for his generosity. His logo now appears on our web site in appreciation of his support of our association.
And speaking of the web site … I’m in the process of updating the site with new information, logos, 2006 tournament schedule, etc. Due to a mix up (read that: lameness on the part of el prez) you are getting this newsletter without the August pictures. They will appear on the web version of the tournament results.
Now, on to the winners:
Playing in another full field (thank you), this month’s format was “Match Play against Par” and only six members beat old man par.
Coming in first place was Roger Huxman, who was 4-up on the course.
Second place went to David Freedman who came in at 3-up beating out third place winner Jaime Moreno, with a matching of the score cards.
The other three members to beat par were Tony DeNigro, Jay Flynn and Mariano Torres-Garcia, all at 1-up. We’ll also mention David Marshall and Gregory Stula, who came in even on the day. Kudos to you all for some fine play.
Closest-to-the-pin honors this month went to John Herman, who put it 4’10” from the hole on # 6 and drained the putt for the bird, and Jaime Moreno, who put it 7’10” from the hole on the 12th, had to settle for a par three but still good enough to net a 2 and win the hole.
Long drive on the 14th hole went to Roger Huxman, who is now well on his way to becoming the most annoying member in the association. If he’s not winning the long drive competition, he’s winning the tournament. (Or both). If he’s not in the tournament, his son is winning the tournament. And the long drive, as well. And then, he gets to hug the Amstel AND Heineken girls. (Those pictures will be on the web site). He’s like that grotesque monster in the Sci-Fi thriller, “The Thing That Wouldn’t Lose”. But we love him, just the same.
I should also mention fellow member, Michael Rafalowicz, who seems to be in every edition of the Herald for his accomplishments on the golf course. He just lost out in the finals of the Elite Match Play tournament losing 1-down. He also just recently shot a 3-under par, nine holes somewhere, but I forget where. Or, maybe I just made it up. Anyway, congratulations Michael, and stay away from our tournaments, ok?
Which brings us to presenting this month’s newly created, yet highly coveted, “It’s About Damn Time!” award to fellow member, Jahan Islami (real name), who joined the association on September 24, 2003 and has just played in his first tournament this month. Welcome, Jahan, and thank you for subsidizing the Huxman family, lo these many years.
That’s it for now. Look for the tournament pictures and updated information on the web site as soon as I get around to it.
Next tourney is Sept. 17. See you there.
Sincerely,
Bill Hayes
