June 2005 Tournament Results:Gentlemen,
This is gonna be quick cuz it's the eleventh-hour for me. Going on a (national lampoon) family vacation tomorrow, bright and early, so need to get this out. (Not that's it's late or anything).
You can tell it's summer. Half of the members are up north, escaping the heat and hurricanes of South Folrida. Another portion are out living it up, globe-trotting their way around places like Wimbledon (Ken Forsyth), Pebble Beach (Jay Flynn), sailing everywhere, (Luigi Buraschi) and I'm sure that the Joe Underwood's of the association are out enjoying themselves while the rest of us schlubs gut it out in the heat. (Editor's note: Enough whining, already!)
You're right. I shouldn't whine because two of our members are on the disabled list: Mike Finuccio, who recently had shoulder surgery and Tony Tarafa, who bruised a tendon in his wrist. We wish them a speedy recovery and hope to see you both back on the course in the fall.
Now, on to the results:
The tournament was played under the Four-ball format (two-man, best-ball teams).
Prizes were awarded for first, second and third place, low-net teams.
First place: The team of Corrado DiFabio and Manny Gonzalez who combined to card a net 60. That's 12-under par, folks. We're told it had nothing to do with the fact that they were playing as a twosome with no marker.
Second place: The team of Tom Horst and Jaime Moreno who came in with a 64, which is still pretty damn good.
Third place: The team of Randy (Harry) Potter and David Freedman who had a 65 on the day.
Closest-to-the-pin honors went to:
Hole # 6: Our tournament director himself, JR Diaz, who put it a distant 14'1" from the hole and drastically missed the putt for the bird.
Hole #12: Randy (Colonel) Potter, who stuck it a mere 2'3" from the hole and easily tapped it in for the deuce.
Long-drive Hole #14: For the second consecutive month the big hitter was David Marshall, who pounded it out there beyond anybody's reach. But watch out David, cuz I see that the Huxman boys are back in town and they're gunnin' for ya, pad'ner.
Can't say anything rude about my playing partners this month because they were JR Diaz, Tom Halley (the board) and Andres Marquez (from the Links Grill). Even I, know when to refrain from spewing out verbal abuse when my partner (Andres) is buying the drinks. (Editor's note: This is a first, folks! Note the date for historic purposes).
We thank everybody that came out to play. It was good to see you all.
And last, but not least, this month's newly created, yet highly coveted, "There Was One?" award goes to me, who, after riding with Andres the entire round, remembers absoultely nothing about the tournament.
Starting out with a bloody mary on the first tee and a beer on every subsequent hole, it went down hill from there. I felt like Darrell Palmer out there.
I won't ever mention the party I went to later that evening.
That's it for now. Next tournament is July 23rd. Sign up now and give JR a break.
Sincerely,
Bill Hayes
