June 2006 Tournament Results:
Gentlemen,
Once again, you’ll see that there are no pictures for this month’s tourney. Bob Alt and Guillermo Wolf were both absent from the festivities and our backup photographer, George Thibault, showed up, but without his camera.
Actually, somebody did take a few shots of Mariano Torres-Garcia accepting his trophy from the 2005 club championships, but since he beat me to get it, we don’t really care where those pictures are.
We would like to welcome new members, Hollis Batchelor and Lon Hicks to the association. (If they only knew what they are getting into.)
This month’s format was Four-Ball, with prizes going to the first, second and third place teams.
First Place, Low Net Team: David Freedman and Randy Potter (60). The boys combined to shoot the winning score but had to squeak into first on a matching of the score cards with;
Second Place. Low Net Team: Antonio Barreto and George Thibault (60). George, representing the French world cup team, “Les Bleu” and Antonio representing Italy” “Les Bleuo). (Editor’s note: We’re not exactly sure if Antonio is Italian, but it makes for good fodder after the finals match.)
Third Place, Low Net Team: Rodrigo Arboleda and Gino Delgado (who we’re pretty sure is Italian) who had a 61 and took third on a matching of the score cards against Jay Flynn/George Gandarias and Neil Christiansen/Lee Smith.
Although we did not have a low gross prize this month, due to the two-man team format, we would like to recognize Lee Smith shooting a blistering 69 out on our very testing track here on the Key. I believe that’s the best gross score recorded in a tournament since I’ve been with the association.
Quick story about Lee …
Seems he was on the range the other day practicing (whatever that is) when our PGA Master professional teaching pro, Kevin Perkins, comes over to him and says, “Nice swing. You must be, what, about an eight?”
Lee immediately challenged Kevin to a match at four strokes a side.
Closest-to-the-pin honors this month went to:
Hole #6: Phil Allen (3’9”) and drained the putt for the bird.
Hole #12: David Freedman (3’0”) from the hole but had to settle for par. (Padding his 8 handicap, no doubt).
Long Drive on hole #14 went to Lee Smith who was the first one off the tee and the only name on the card. (Could he have been the only one in the fairway all day?)
And now, hopefully last, but certainly not least, this month’s newly created, yet highly coveted, “Which Brain is Smaller?” award goes to new member, Phil Allen.
You see, a couple weeks ago, Phil e-mails me and says he just read the June tournament results and he thought there was an error on the closest-to-the-pin award on the 6th hole. He said he remembered being 3’8” away.
Couldn’t help but to e-mail him back to explain:
1. I haven’t ever written the June tourney results yet, and
2. He wrote down 3”9” on the card.
Got back an interesting response from Phil saying he just realized he was reading the results from last June’s tournament and apologized for the distance error in that he, personally, is not familiar with dealing with lengths of eight or nine inches.
Not to worry Phil, your trophy will be a more representative 3 1/2 inches long, er, rather, high.
That’s it for now. Next tournament is this Saturday so sign up now!
Sincerely,
Bill Hayes
