September 2008 Tournament Results:
Gentlemen,
Once again, a thank you to our sponsors. Thanks to Meghan Halley (our official cashier) for her efforts, and also on top of the list this month is an apology I owe to Juan Porro.
Seems when I was listing the winners of last month’s tourney, I said that Juan Porro and Jorge Dighero came in first and then later in the paragraph referred to him as “Jose”.Sorry about that, Juan, but don’t take it personally. I once called Jorge, “George”.
And speaking of Dighero, after the round he happily reported that his “suck switch” was working with only a minor glitch … it was stuck in the “on” position all day.
Now on to this month’s winners.
The format was Individual Medal Play, Blind Draw. This is a two man team format except you don’t know who your partner is going to be until after the tournament during lunch.
One quick comment (so I can get it out of the way early on here) …
My score for the tourney was 111. That’s right! One hundred eleven and no cents (sense).
I thought that was my worst score in a tournament format until I was reminded by friends and family that I once shot 123 at the TPC Sawgrass (which I had successfully put out of my mind).
So I offered my apologies to whoever my partner was going to be before the pairings took place. That blanket apology was later directed personally to David Freedman.
The only good thing about my 111 was that Tom Halley and, who was it, let’s see, oh yeah, Al Switzer played that day. We’ll leave it at that.
There was only one member to shoot net under par on the day, Gino Delgado, who was paired up with a fortunate Mike Black to take the first place prize.
Their combined net scores were 145.
Second Place went to the team of Greg Huxman and a grateful Richard Deilke, who combined for a score of 146.
Third Place went to Dave Marshall and thankful Keith Chasin (I know, I played in his foursome) who had a total of 148.
And, with the Ryder Cup being contested the same day as our tournament, Ken Forsyth (our local Brit) and I had our own Ryder Cup match. The results: Europe 6 & 5. Ouch! But hey! I shot a 111!!!
But Ken, I do want to thank you for doing the scoring for the tournaments when you’re there. It really helps out a lot. We owe you a bottle of fine Argentinianian red wine for your assistance.
Closest-to-the-pin honors this month went to:
Hole #6: Greg Huxman, who put it 6’4” from the pin and settled for the par.
Hole #12: Greg Huxman, who put it 4’2” from the hole and got the bird.
When I joked about Greg getting two bottles of wine when he’s only 17, he responded, “F-U, I’m 22! Where’s the respect for the elders?
Long Drive, Hole #14: Juan (or is it, Jose?) Porro. Which, although the big boys were playing from the blue tees, doesn’t surprise me because I once saw him hit his tee shot on 14 into the trees on the left, drop and hit his next shot onto the green and drained the putt for the birdie. Chicks dig the long ball.
The Stirling (did I spell that right?) Cup is in full swing and the club championship qualifying matches are underway. October’s tournament is the last chance to qualify so please sign up soon.
And last but not least (whatever that means) this month’s newly created, yet highly coveted, “111? You’ve Got to be Kidding!” award goes to …
(Editor’s note: We regret that we must sign off now to avoid any further embarrassment.)
Sincerely,
Bill Hayes
El Presidente 111 (that’s, “The Third”)
